Hello Campers! (In a Welsh accent, for those that remember Hi-De-Hi ![:)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 "Smile :)"))

I've just been emailed a T7 Coast for £63k, and am struggling to ascertain the differences versus the Ocean at £68 that I'm considering. Both are 2L Diesel but unlike the T6.1 where the lack of fog lights, digi-dash and cupboard material differences are obvious, I'm finding the T7 version differences less so.

Anyone had experience of driving both and any insights to share as apart from the rear netting replacing the over seat drawer, I'm struggling to see what justifies the extra £5k?

Doesn't the Coast have a manual poptop roof?

In the T6 yes but for T7(Multivan) both Coast and Ocean are electro-hydraulic roof. (only the Beach is now manual)

Internally the Coast is different trim and doesn't have the rear 'airline' style rear locker.
One point to check as I don't think it was ever completely answered is does the Coast have a parking heater?
Think the Ocean has the IQ LED lights (auto adjust according to oncoming vehicles) where as Coast has normal LED lights.

Parking heater is optional on their Coast.

This is what I got from the German site for the standard extras on the Ocean

**Equipment such as California Coast with outdoor folding table, 230 V socket with shore power for second cooking stop, additionally with roof storage box, Climatronic, air parking heater and other features.**

As above. The Ocean and Coast are broadly the same with the Coast having netting and not a fold down rear cupboard. The camper parts are almost identical although I don't think it has the really dark tinted rear windows. The Ocean has more driver tech such as fancy headlights, front light bar and other safety features/driving aids. The Coast does come with a camping parking heater whilst the Ocean has front windscreen diesel heating as well for frosty mornings. This has a separate key fob to start it remotely from in the house.

It comes down to what extras you want to add as you can easily spec up a Coast that costs more than an Ocean which includes all those things as standard.

Maybe its a market thing, but the air parking heater is definitely an optional feature on the Beach and Coast.

In the UK as far as I've been able to work out the heating is official identical on all 3 models except for the addition of a remote control on the Ocean. You can use the app via Bluetooth on all of them anyway

Regarding the visuals, the Ocean gets a glazed light bar across the whole of the front grill. On the beach and coast it's solid (black I think). It makes quite a +ve difference visually.

I should also add VW changed the brochure a few months back to remove the previous 3 heating options and simplify

If you've opted for the black roof then it sort of matches that and the black mirrors in my opinion

On the Ocean, certainly on mine, the remote turns on the diesel heater in the front of the vehicle, which I'm assuming is a wet system as it operates the standard air vents in the Cali, not the camping diesel heater.

The headlights having laser/anti blind technology is worth the upgrade alone, very effective. As is the heating front windscreen.
Isn't the heated seats and heated steering wheel an Ocean exclusive? ?

Heated seats can be specified on any spec (and are mandatory if you go for art velours). Heated steering wheel is also available on any spec but you have to spec it with travel assist which makes it an expensive option

Ahh I see! Probably worth the upgrade to Ocean then if the OP is still mulling it over. Thanks for the clarification

As it happens I have always felt that the ‘Airplane’ locker holds very little and just gets in the way both physically and visually (limits rear view) on our T6.1 Coast.

(Sorry, not a really useful comment I s’pose but it might be food for thought for anyone who hasn’t driven one with the locker)

We bought our Coast in 2022 new but briefly considered the Ocean but felt that the £9k+ difference in price could not be justified for the electric pop up roof and sliding door which is the main difference in the two models

The OP was referring to the new T7 California, not the T6.1.

The T7 overhead locker is bigger than the T6.1 as there are no speakers and so no reduction at the sides. I can get 4 packing cubes, plus hats/gloves etc.

We store clothes in it, its a lot bigger than you expect it be and a great storage bin.

Eh? That must reduce the visibility out the back even more (unless you are short I'spose)

Good news is that it doesn't affect visibility at all

Is it still bizarrely stiff \ awkward to operate?
